
Biography
Xiao Liu is a classically trained flutist who is currently working as a freelance musician and flute teacher in the Boston area. She is studying with previous former Boston Symphony Orchestra piccoloist and flutist Geralyn Coticone and is pursuing her Master’s degree at Boston University. She is an enthusiastic flutist who in loves performing with different genres of music.
Ms. Liu, as an orchestral musician, who has collaborated with remarkable artists and conductors such as five-time Grammy Award-Winner gospel singer Sandi Patty, three-time Grammy Award-Winner producer Jesse Lewis, one of the greatest Chinese tenors YuQiang Dai, conductor Maestro Bramwell Tovey, conductor Franz Anton Krager, and conductor David J. Martins. She has been heard in venues such as Boston Symphony Hall, Jordan Hall, New York’s Carnegie Hall, Tulsa Performance Center, Catlett Music Center at in Oklahoma University, and in her hometown Xinghai Concert Hall and Shenzhen Concert Hall in Guangdong, China. Ms. Liu has recorded The Vacant Shore by John H. Wallace as part of the Boston University Wind Ensemble under the direction of David Martins.
As a Chamber musician, Ms. Liu’s flute quartet won the second prize at the chamber competition of the Beijing International Flute Festival in 2014(2014). She, together with Chinese harpist Xingni Xiao, performed for National Chekiang University Alumni Association in North America (NCUAA) at their 2017 annual conference and performed in XiaoHaiYan theatre for the community of HaiZhu district in Guangzhou, China.
During her undergraduate study in at the XingHai conservatory of music(XHCM), Ms. Liu participated in the and exchange program in at the University of Central Oklahoma. She has received many scholarships and awards including Excellent Student in 2011-2013, Outstanding Performance scholarship in 2012, and President honor scholarship in 2014. Ms. Liu graduated from XHCM as Outstanding Graduate in 2015. Her former teachers including Chinese flutist and educator Qi Yan, Japanese flutist Emi Hayashi, and American flutist Dr.Emily Butterfield.
Ms. Liu loves all different type of music and is especially interested in traditional Chinese music. She performed with Chinese dulcimer performer QiWen Lan for the traditional dulcimer culture promotion concert in 2013. Ms. Liu has also joined the Chinese Instrument Orchestra of XHCM performed performing for the local community. She is dedicated to creating a bridge between flute and Chinese music and hopes to present the traditions in a new way
